this super sweet couple traveled all the way to milwaukee for both their maternity portrait session and their newborn session! baby M wasn’t so eager to sleep but after a long couple of hours, she finally gave in and we were able to get these beautiful portraits!

fun summer kids activities | making sidewalk paint at home!

my older girls (6 1/2 and 8) LOVE to make and use sidewalk paint and today we made our first batch of the year (warm weather has come late to milwaukee). the recipe is super easy and takes no time at all (unless you’re attempting to photograph the process, then it will take forever and you will end up with cornstarch in your camera!). i store the paint in little canning jars because they seal tightly, stack easily and are pretty. we often give a set as birthday gifts – six colors, a pack of paintbrushes and the recipe to make more!

SIDEWALK PAINT makes about six 2/3 cup jars

2 cups cornstarch
2 cups water
food coloring
big mixing bowl (or glass measuring cup)
wooden spoon
6 canning jars or other sealable containers

Combine cornstarch and water; quickly mix it up before it clumps up! Pour equal amounts into six containers and add food coloring. 6-10 drops per jar makes a great, vibrant color.

i seriously cannot get over how much i’ve missed being able to do family portrait sessions outside! it seems like this winter was unbearably long AND i missed out on outdoor portraits last fall because of that cute little baby…

earlier this week, i photographed this little guy at a little park in downtown milwaukee with the city on side and the lake on the other. so pretty! he’s 18 months old and like all 18 month olds before him, he likes to run away from just about everything, especially the lady with the camera. thankfully, a rousing game of peekaboo captured his attention for a good 3 1/2 seconds. also: ants. the boy loves ants.it was fun to spend an afternoon with him and his lovely family and i look forward to next time!

i first photographed this little bit when she was still in her mama’s belly, then again at just a week old (and at a week + one day – she’s one of the few who wouldn’t sleep for me on the first go). look how big she’s gotten!

i’d like to share excerpts from a couple of articles that i’ve found in the last several months. the first is from the huffington post and it made it’s way around facebook when it first came out, but it’s worth reading again:

“We’re sporting mama bodies and we’re not as young as we used to be. We don’t always have time to blow dry our hair, apply make-up, perhaps even bathe (ducking). The kids are so much cuter than we are; better to just take their pictures, we think.

Our daughters need to see us vulnerable and open and just being ourselves — women, mamas, people living lives. Avoiding the camera because we don’t like to see our own pictures? it’s easy to put all of the effort and love into having images created of the children, but will your children have photos of you? will you have photos of you and your parents? you and your siblings? who is documenting YOU?

this mother’s day, i want to encourage you to be in the photographs. grab your kids or your mom or your sisters or your friends and be in the photographs. whether you hire me or take them yourselves, be in the photographs.

your children will thank you for it.
